Sweep Pattern: A sweep pattern is used to cast cylindrical objects which are symmetrical about an axis. Main components of this pattern are a base (placed in sand mass), a vertical spindle, and a wooden template as shown in Fig. 20c. The outer edge of the template contains a contour which corresponds to the shape of required casting. Upon rotating the vertical spindle, a cavity is produced inside the rammed sand.

Segmental Pattern: Segmental patterns are usually a segment of a final cast product. This pattern type is popular for making circular components such as rims, wheels, gears, pulleys etc. Figure 20d represents a typical segmental pattern.
